What are your greatest travel fears?05 August, 2011 by Chad
Regardless of how frequent a traveler one is, there is bound to be some anxieties when taking a long trip overseas. And be it for business or pleasure, many will find it uneasy to take the first step onto new soil. Today we investigate the most common worries faced by people planning their trips.
The following information was collected from a survey conducted by Goo Rankings on what Japanese people most fear before their actual trip, though many if not most of the sentiments are universal.
2. The Language Barrier
3. Paying for purchases overseas
4. Anxiety of traveling for the first time
5. Hotel amenities
6. Local food
8. Choosing accommodation
9. What to wear
10. Differences in administration
Perhaps the most worrying thing, before and during travels is the fear of the unexpected. This is reflected by the number one result. While other uncertainties can be prepared for somewhat, illness and theft are two things that are often beyond control.
Amusingly, I would think of Japan as the prime example for many of these fears brought up. With the language barrier and the countries seemingly complex transportation system to first time visitors being some of the most often cited problems faced by first time visitors to Japan.
Strangely, despite being potentially the most costly factor, accommodation worries place fairly low on this list. And more of the Japanese contributors seem to be more concerned over the potential lack of extra amenities in their chosen hotel rather than the difficulties in choosing one in the first place.
While seemingly all over the place, the rest of the results have a sizable sample giving surprising answers. Perhaps owing to Goo’s predominantly female user base, many reflected their concerns over blending into the overseas fashion.
Itinerary concerns only come in at #12. With an almost equal number more worried about not being brought to enough shopping areas, which seems to be a likely primary concern of middle aged folk traveling through a tour group.
Missing is the mention of the often horrific airline food, though by the time one comes face to face with a tray of mush, it is already too late.
