Tochigi Lemon Milk
Match made in heaven or disastrous experiment?

Back during our visit to Nikko, we stumbled across the prefecture’s unique snacks branded “Kanto Tochigi Lemon”. Judging from the combination, you’d think that perhaps Tochigi specialized producing Lemons and Milk. Surely at some point must had figured it was only natural to try combining the two.
Yet sadly the Tochigi Lemon Milk doesn’t really contain any lemons, and not much milk either. Instead, the the product is only flavored significantly enough to fool your tastebuds into thinking it lemon.
Most people should be able to accept milk, many will even love it. And if there are two fruity flavors you can rely on, it’s probably strawberry and lemon. Yet the unusual combination may put off some.
Strangely though, I didn’t find the taste quite as foreign as you’d imagine. It ended up tasting sort of like a lemon chiffon cake just that instead of a light fluffy snack, this lemon cream daifuku was far more filling.
Don’t expect to be able to down more than one or two at a time. Though the same could be same for most Japanese souvenir snacks but they were made to be shared anyways.
You’ll be able to find a bunch of other Lemon Milk flavored products in Tochigi such as biscuits, candy and the actual milk drink. If might enjoy them you’re a fan of yoghurt or milky flavored confectioneries, otherwise it’ll still make for interesting conversation.
