Spruce Taqueria
Amazing tacos waiting to be discovered
28 October, 2010 by Yan
If I had just 10 bucks to spare for a truly satisfying meal, I could say right now that this money would be well spent on some Spruce Taqueria’s tacos. These words of revelation are well, based on my fulfilling (even with the huge anticipation) very first visit to the little taco shack located in Phoenix Park.
Great little gems like this don’t appear in Singapore often but when they do, it will be most likely spread amongst foodies very quickly. Kudos to Chubby Hubby who happened to be one who spread the word of these tacos to the community.
If there’s any indication to whether a particular place serves great food, Nazi timing would be the tell tale sign (well, for me at least). Spruce Taqueria happened to make it onto this list with its lunch-only operating hours. But that is not nearly the best part yet, as they happen to be open only during the weekdays.
It doesn’t help that it is also located in Phoenix Park, which only convenient means of access is by car. Those who need directions, you could check out the map here.
And yet, the pros outweigh the cons so much that lots of foodies don’t mind visiting this place to get their taste buds tingled. Myself included.
The variety of food served at Spruce Taqueria can be best compared to that of a canteen, since there’s really only either the tacos, quesadilla or Mexican rice bowl to be ordered as a set.
A variety of meats (there’s also a vegetarian poblano and mushroom topping) can be chosen with your choice of tacos/quesadilla/rice bowl so there’s an option for anyone, even those with dietary restrictions. Extra a la carte toppings, more tacos or other items can be ordered for extra satisfaction. There’s also a daily special topping. It happened to be chicken hearts this day.
Depending on the availability of each item, some toppings may not be offered on any particular day. Keep in mind that popular items sell out fast, so be early if you want to try everything they have to offer. I was somewhat disappointed that the pork carnitas topping was not available then but it just meant that I would have to be back again another day to try it out.
I practically ordered tacos for every topping available for the day. If only there was more stomach space, I would have ordered every extra item on their a la carte menu.
Without a doubt, every topping here is as good as it gets, so just try out whatever your dietary restrictions allows you to. Also do yourself a favor by ordering the very refreshing, fresh watermelon and lime aqua fresca against their other drinks available.
Should Spruce Taqueria ever happen to open a new, more conveniently located shop, I’d promise to visit on a weekly basis, or hell, daily basis even. Tacos are a much under appreciated food in Singapore. But if given more support, it might be successful no?
