Halcali’s take on the Kome Kome Club classic06 October, 2010 by Chad
Before I was a Morning Musume fan or even knew what AKB48 was I had been fond of Halcali. They are just one of those acts that you can’t help but root for. It certainly helps that they never fail to amuse me with their funny antics and ever so catchy music. You’ve could guess how excited I was to learn that their newest single would be a cover of Roman Hikou (Romance Plane) by Kome Kome Club, an old fave.
The only thing that surprises me more than Halcali’s fun and addictive music is of course their abysmal sales. Their last single, Endless Night, somehow managed to sell only 663 copies. Hopefully, they will fare better this time. No sales doesn’t mean that people won’t be hearing the song though as Roman Hikou (浪漫飛行) is being used in the new Sony Cybershot ads starring Kitagawa Keiko.
This is of course not the first time Roman Hikou has been covered. The cosplaying Visual Kei group Psycho le Cemu did a rock version back in 2003. But you’ve got to love Halcali’s unique blend of hip hop and pop. As a bonus, their back with their signature silly hip hop dancing which was missing for other recent tracks. They always bring a smile to my face.
Of course, the song doesn’t compare to the original by Kome Kome Club and it’s out of the world video, those were the 90s.Click here to search CDJapan for Roman Hikou and other related items.
