Rex Cinema

The place to get your Bollywood fix

07 November, 2010 by

It seems that Singapore has no lack of interesting places waiting to be discovered. A while ago, I found this interesting cinema where you can get more than just your movie fix. If someone ever asked me to recommend an exotic location for movies, I would cheekily refer them to the Rex Cinema.

Located at the very obscure MacKenzie Road, Rex Cinema is actually a relatively new establishment. Prior to that, the same building was actually used as a skating rink, a church and even a nightclub. But more than 50 years ago the very same Rex Cinema stood at this exact location, screening movies for the then Singaporean crowd before it closed its doors.

Now with Rex back to its roots and screening movies again, whats the major draw point of the place? A hint: Rex Cinema is conveniently located within walking distance of Little India MRT station. Now owned by a pair of local Indian entrepreneurs, the small cinema provides screenings of English, Mandarin and Tamil movies.

Unsurprisingly, the cinema actually screens more Bollywood shows than any other genre. Watching these Bollywood movies at Rex Cinema together with its passionate following does indeed bring the experience to a whole new level.

Yep, about 99% of the shows here are from Bollywood.

It might be an exotic movie house, but the same house rules apply.

Just for your information, the price to watch a Bollywood film, is not so different from any other movie in Singapore. In fact, it might cost more. Once patrons had to fork out 17 bucks for a very popular show. Other than that, weekdays are the best timings for enjoying your shows without too much of a crowd. Weekends, particularly Sundays are jam-packed with eager customers getting their movie fix.

With that said, I have yet to watch any films in Rex Cinema. I’ll give our readers an update once I find a chance watch a Bollywood film here.

I’ll also provide with a general map on the location of Rex Cinema.

Another place to watch the Bollywood movies is the Jade Cinema (Shaw Towers, Beach Road).

i went to watch enthiran earlier today, in the smaller "hall 2" upstairs. the sound format used for it was dts. it's nice listening to dts again after so long, since most cinemas (non-tamil/hindi) in singapore have practically abandoned dts, in favour of the inferior, lower bit-rate dolby digital instead.

so far, both the dts, and dolby formats used in commercial cinemas are the lossy type, different from the lossless dts-hd master audio, and dolby truehd used on the blu-ray home video format.
