PONPONPON
Sickeningly sweet new single from the producer of Perfume
22 July, 2011 by Chad
Earlier this week, I commented about this psychedelic new offering from Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. Due to the editorial nature of this site, more colloquial news will sneak into our Twitter feeds far faster so if you don’t mind the occasional AKB48 spam, feel free to follow me on Twitter. But perhaps this electropop feast deserves a second look (or listen).
18 year old Kyary Pamyu Pamyu (きゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ), commonly known as just Kyary, is yet another Japanese blogger turn celebrity. You can find Kyary’s Ameblo blog here. She is no stranger to the limelight and is a common face in popular teen fashion magazines.
A couple days ago, she released her debut single PONPONPON, a addictive sugar sweet electropop tune that bears the signature sound of Nakata Yasutaka. Capsule’s Nakata Yasutaka is of course famous for his extensive work as a composer and producer having shaped mainstream names like Meg and the highly successful technopop trio, Perfume.
PONPONPON’s video is a technicolor collage pop fashion, art and culture. It’s tune, too repetitive for even Perfume. But like Nakata’s other works, is an addictive listen even if the video had me black out for a moment. The combination of loud visuals and catchy beats is terribly suited for Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s first release and is bound to turn heads.
