SUPER☆GiRLS’ 4th single16 March, 2012 by Chad
While initially scheduled for an April 25 release, SUPER☆GiRLS 4th single will be hitting shelves one week early next month on 18th April. The latest single is titled 1,000,000☆スマイル (pronounced Million Smile) and to celebrate the growing success of the group, avex has prepared an elaborate program for fans built around its release.
Whether the title is a plug at AKB48, or simply the group reinforcing their high aims remains to be seen. But in continuing the trend SUPER☆GiRLS, Million Smile continues to draw inspiration multiple popular idol groups past and present.
Million Smile is currently being used as the theme song for SUPER☆GiRLS’ collaboration with Ito Yokado’s lifestyle items and good day clothing line. This is not the first time they have worked together with Ito Yokado as they seem to be churning out new commercials for the 7-Elevan subsidiary every other week. You can see the more of the commercial (which contains a preview the opening of Million Smile) and a “Making Of” video at this good day campaign site.
From previews, it looks like Million Smile will continue the trend of their previous singles as typical feel good pop idol song. The use of big band instruments is even more prominent then before though and I cannot help but draw similarities to a certain old Morning Musume song. I have come to expect some great catchy tunes from SUPER☆GiRLS so here’s to hoping that the full length track and music video do not disappoint.
To one up the competition, all copies of Million Smile will contain a special key code, which will allow for fans to cast votes for one of the 12 members. The girl with the most votes by the deadline will be given a solo opportunity in the following single.
There are more bonuses for fans who have subscribed to the free SUPER☆GiRLS quasi-social network, Maidoru! SUPER☆GiRLS.
Last month, fans were able to vote for who would sing each of the 30 individual lines in a remastering of MAX! Otome Gokoro which will be included as a bonus track in the Limited Edition version of the Million Smile CD. This week, users can also decide on which new profile pictures (custom for each new single) for their oshimen will be used.
By keeping fans directly involved, avex are able to make decisions that would please the most number of fans, while nurturing a sense of emotional attachment that leads directly to more sales. It’s a win-win situation for everyone. Generally, I also like how literally avex is taking the word “oshimen” (pushed member) in marketing the girls as idols you can help push as support producers, rather than surrogate girlfriends.
Like other idol releases as of late, each Million Smile pre-order will come with a bonus photo exclusive to that retailer. Conveniently, the SUPER☆GiRLS website provides samples of all their photo bonusesand a list of where to get them. You can check the site out before making any purchases to avoid any disappointment.
The SUPER☆GiRLS members also appear in videos to appealing for viewers votes, also stating what song they will perform should they win the ballot.
