Mihama American Village

One stop entertainment and shopping in the heart of Okinawa

It is almost impossible to look through any travel guides on Okinawa without seeing a mention of the Mihama American Village, the popular shopping spot in Chatan.

Plenty of shopping options at the Mihama American Village.

It is said that the area used to be a part of an American military base before the land was returned to Okinawa. The “American” theme at the district is most prominent at American Depot which stocks up on American imports and vintage clothes.

The annex buildings of Depot Island also offer other dinning and shopping options. Check out for Habu Box for only-in-Okinawa T-shirts and apparel, if you’re looking for something unique to bring home.

Keep a lookout for the unique and colorful architecture of Depot Island.

At Carnival Mihama Park, you can also pick up Okinawan souvenirs, similar to the ones found at Kokusai-dori. The iconic red Ferris wheel sits atop the Carnival Mihama Park, and yes, you can ride it for 500 yen for 15 minutes. I’d recommend getting on it as the sun is getting down for beautiful sunset photos from a high view.  Okinawa’s first character-themed café, the Aqua Panda’s café is also found in this building along with a museum of optical illusion.

Food at the Aqua Panda’s café is created to look like the characters there.

Mihama American Village is also host to an international array of food. Choose from Indian food, pancakes, shabu-shabu, steak, sushi, Peruvian food, Okinawa cuisine, crepe, pizza, burgers, teppanyaki, Thai food, ice cream, yogurt and many more. You never have to worry about being hungry!

I was surprised to find Chicken Rice at one of the restaurants in Carnival Mihama Park.

Besides shopping and eating, the tourist hotspot is the place to go for movies, karaoke, bowling, arcade games, indoor kids playground, manicures, beauty services, and there are also art galleries, Akara Gallery and Bokunen Museum of Art.

The Akara building, which houses art galleries.

As it is close to two military bases, the place is popular with American military members and their families, so you can expect a mix locals, Americans and tourist roaming around the area. And if you visit during Christmas, the entire “village” lights up in festive lights and decorations.
