Hard Gay
HOOOOOOOOOOO!!! 25 February, 2010 by Yan
Hoooooooo!!! Razor Ramon Sumitani HG aka Hard Gay, skyrocketed into the spotlight of Japan media in 2005. Chances are if you live in Japan or a close follower of Japanese entertainment, you should not have missed out on the comedian’s outrageous personality on TV/Youtube.
Whats so unique about this TV personality? Dressed in a tight leather outfit with the letters HG etched on this back of his top, tight black hot pants (housing a big bulge within) and of course his signature leather cap and sunglasses (that never leaves his head), visually he is a character you won’t be able to miss.
Of course, just being visually striking didn’t skyrocket Hard Gay into fame, what made him memorable were his hilarious signature moves and catchphrases that he performed on screen. He captured the hearts of many, many viewers…in a funny way.
Hard Gay’s Signature Move List
He usually starts the show by shouting “Hello, this is Hard Gay!” “Hoooooo!!!”.
He uses the catchphrase” Okayyyy!!!” which is as commonly as his “Hoooooo!!!”.
His trademark pelvis thrusts, which he does that all the time during the show.
His appearance on the screen and dance moves are usually accompanied by Ricky Martin’s “Livin La Vida Loca” song.
He does a “Talk to the hand” movement and shouts “Sei Sei Sei!!!” whenever someone tried to refuse or oppose him on the screen.
He will bend over, slap his ass and shout “Come over and get some!!” whenever he wants to tell someone to come after him.
Hard Gay gained the public’s attention when he was featured in the Bakusho Mondai no Bakuten! (Daibakuten) Saturday variety show on Japan’s TBS network in 2005. The show featured him going about various cities proving social care or helping out people…but in the most gay-ish way that he could muster up. Usually, the “victims” of his social improvements end up dumbfounded or stun locked by his outrageous outfit and pelvic thrusts.
How popular was he during the peak of his limelight? Other than Daibakuten, he also appeared on several TV programs. In the Japanese variety show Gaki no Taukai, Hard Gay portrayed a gym teacher. He instructed players on how to perform pelvic thrusts during the high school episode of the batsu game. He was also featured as a contestant in Viking: The Ultimate Obstacle Course and managed to finish the game at 2nd place. He also made several small cameos on animes and games like Gantz, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Freshly Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland.
Hard Gay even managed to release a single entitled “Young Man” during 2006, which is a Japanese rendition of the Village People’s YMCA.
Hard Gay’s outrageous behavior is actually the direct opposite of the man behind the big black sunglasses and wacky outfit. He tries to keep his personal and TV personality’s lives as separate as he can but will try to cover a little of his private life as Masaki Sumitani.
Real Name: Masaki Sumitani
Birthdate/Birthplace: 18 December 1975/Harima, Hyogo Prefecture
3 Measurements: 106/89/107
Nope he’s not really homosexual. In fact he’s married to: Anna Suzuki (Ex-member of the MiniSkirt Police)
Masaki Sumitani picked up wrestling as a hobby in his college years. During those years he met Makoto Izubuchi and in 1997 they teamed up to form the duo Razor Ramon. They started their comedy stage acts from the Kansai area and slowly gained popularity in several stage shows. The duo also managed to gain several awards from their stage acts. Other than performing their signature HG routine, they also often played the roles of Yakuza, salaryman, construction workers and many other characters.
Whenever Hard Gay is on a show and there’s a need to mention about his real self, he would always refer to himself as “Sumitani-kun”, much rather than saying “I”. Whenever fans bump into the real Masaki Sumitani and gave praises to his good performances on stage, he would stop them and say, “Tell that to Hard Gay”. He would then go back to his dressing room and reappear as Hard Gay for his fans.
Sadly in Japan, comedians also die down faster in its fickle media industry, Hard Gay was no exception. Since 2006, his popularity has very much died down. In the process though he got himself a lovely wife that same year. He will not be appearing as Hard Gay much on Japanese TV anymore, but instead he appears now as Masaki Sumitani (himself).
