Great Singapore Sale

Two months of nationwide savings

17 June, 2010 by

This year, the beloved Great Singapore Sale (GSS) will last from 28th May to the 25th of July. During the two month long extravaganza, shoppers will be able to find attractive discounts nationwide. While Singapore plays host to many promotional campaigns yearly to support its status as a tourism hub, the GSS is one event that gives locals something to rejoice about too.

The Great Singapore Sale was first organized by the Singapore Tourism Board in 1984 as another means of attracting tourists into Singapore. The event met with much success and has since been held yearly in the middle of each year. During this period, it has become tradition for shopping malls and retail chains to offer sales of one kind or another. Other businesses have been quick to adopt promotions of their own during this time of year too.

Orchard Road has seen many new malls in the past year with the ongoing expansion of Singapore’s favorite shopping district. Eager shoppers will have all the more ground to cover during this year’s sale.

Keeping that in mind, the major malls have decided to stay open until 11 pm for certain nights of the GSS.

This year the Ion in particular is holding many promotions for shoppers. For example, those spending at least $2000 in total within the mall will be treated to a complimentary limousine ride home. Unfortunately, this offer is only applicable to tourists visiting Singapore so locals hoping to get a ride home with their new 50 inch TV will be disappointed.

In fact, locals will be quick to notice that most of the offers this year round will be catered to tourists again. Shoppers will still benefit from between 10-20% off many purchases but more attractive promotions will undoubtedly have a catch. Original prices are inflated and many retail outlets are also guilty of using the Great Singapore Sale as an opportunity to clear last season’s goods.

While it is easy to loose oneself in a shopping frenzy in the sparkling lights of Orchard Road. It pays off to be mindful of one’s purchases. Savvy buyers will still be able to walk away with bargains. Those who waited on old purchases will benefit from clearance sales. Small retail outlets normally offer promotions too specific to be of any use, but a 10% discount on more established brands is still a significant saving.

This year, Sony has set up some sort of day care booth outside Ngee Ann City where husbands and children can be conveniently left at. The large play pens should occupy them such that you can go about bargain hunting without distractions. The proximity to the rest of the shopping malls means that they are never too far to help with bulkier purchases.
