First single from Akimoto Yasushi’s adult only group23 November, 2010 by Chad
GAGAGA, SDN48’s first ever single will be released tomorrow. Supported by Universal Music, SDN48 hopes to take the rest of Asia by storm with a simultaneous release in both Korea and Japan.
For those unfamiliar with the group, SDN48 is the “adult only” sister group to AKB48. With the release of GAGAGA, SDN48 will flaunt their mainstream “sexy” direction, not unlike the norm in the Korean pop scene now. Akimoto’s decision to market the girls to a more mature audience is probably a step in the right direction as SDN48 will be able to appeal to a board public audience without competing with AKB48’s existing share of the market.
The single draws inspiration from recent K-pop tunes. Korean phrases are added into GAGAGA’s lyrics and the performance features a simple dance “hook”, a trait that proved phenomenally popular for K-pop. SDN48 was recently in Korea, where they collaborated with 4minute to promote both groups’ singles.
GAGAGA will be released as a CD+DVD with two (hardly) different covers, as well as a Theater version only available from at their headquarters in Akihabara. First press copies of the single will include tickets for a handshake session or in the case of the theater version, an event where fans will be able to take photos together with their favorite member.
Personally, I’m definitely enjoying the song after having only listened to it a few times. The dance influences are a nice departure from the usual pop fare and the video manages to showcase the group’s sexy theme without being overly gaudy. We’ll see how the Japanese and Korean public feel soon enough.Click here to search CDJapan for GAGAGA and other related items.
