The next item we’ll try making is a DIY Taiyaki kit called Renji de Chin Tsukutte Taiyakincho, レンジでチンッ 作ってたいやきんちょ. We decided to try the warm fish shaped azuki bean filled pastries today. It seemed more palatable than the candy sushi, especially when you consider that one step actually involves cooking.
Taiyaki is almost as symbolic Japanese as sushi. The lovely street snack is loved by all ages, as long as its still warm and not burnt. It’s also one of the simplest things to make, since it is essentially just pancake batter.
Not everyone has a fish shaped grill at home though and that’s where DIY Taiyaki kits come in. Kracie Popin’ Cookin’, the brand that makes the Sushi Candy actually has a candy kit version of this dish. But rival brand “Renji de Chin” attempts to one up the competition by actually having you play with dough.
The kit come with two packets of flour, some azuki (red) bean powder, okonomiyaki powder and a microwave save mold. This should be enough to make two pancakes.
We ended up mixing too much water into the first batch though. You really only need two tablespoons of water. As a result, our first taiyaki came out fluffy like those Chinese colored buns you get from night markets.
The next step involves scooping the dough (pouring in this case) to fill up the mold to the marked level. Then you close the lid and dump it into the microwave for 50 seconds.
For safety, it’d be wise to let the tray cool down for a while after. In the meantime, there’s the powder azuki and okonomiyaki sachets to attend to.
When done correctly, the result of the microwave experiment is two hard, almost cookie-like taiyaki halves. After sandwiching the paste between the pieces, the DIY Taiyaki is done.
The taiyaki pieces cool down really quickly. Between that and its solid hard texture, it is clear that the product clearly missed the point here. But thanks to its cooked nature, this snack wasn’t as disgusting as the sushi candy. The result, is something like a taiyaki flavored biscuit.
