Black Rock Shooter

The upcoming fad of the Anime world

27 April, 2010 by

If I said that a mere piece of artwork and and a song could transform into a huge fad in the anime industry, you might think that I’m just spouting nonsense. But, that is what exactly happened in the form of Black★Rock Shooter last year. Black★Rock Shooter(ブラック★ロックシューター) originally existed as a illustration by the artist Huke, and a song that was created for it by Ryo. Both of them were from a group named Supercell. But fans was mesmerized by the artwork and took the liberty of creating a 3D animated video with Ryo’s song.

Originally, the “plot” for Black Rock Shooter was narrated through Ryo’s song, wandering though the barrens of the city searching for lost things that she once hold so dear. The modified 3D animation created by fans had an entirely different approach and included the the narrator’s friend, Dead Master. Betrayed and almost killed by her own friend, Black Rock Shooter tries to track Dead Master down and kill her, in an attempt to free her own spirit.

Here’s a link to the Original PV done by Huke:

With an OVA release set around September this year, Black★Rock Shooter has definitely come a long way from its humble concept illustration. Good Smile Company has already foreseen the potential market for Black★Rock Shooter and have come out with a series of figures and Nendoroids for it. You can see the preview of some of the figures via MJ’s post. If you happen to like them though, chances are you would have to fork out a huge sum of money to buy them off resellers. As of now, any Black★Rock Shooter merchandise commands a high price, even scraps of filers from anime events now float around the auction houses.

I will cover a little on the Black★Rock Shooter characters. I myself have become a small fan and I’m willing to drag a few more to-be-fans with me. The OVA mainly revolves around the 2 lead characters, Black★Rock Shooter and Dead Master, who are respectively the main protagonist and antagonist of the anime. Black Rock Shooter’s real name is Kokui Mato (黒衣 マト) and she will be voiced by Kana Hanazawa. Dead Master’s real name being Takanashi Yomi (小鳥遊 ヨミ)) and she is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro.

The appearance of Black★Rock Shooter is a pale-skinned, blue-eyed girl, with black hair in uneven twin tails. She dons Gothic inspired clothing which consist of a string bikini top under a black jacket. The jacket has a white stripe running along the length of each of her sleeves and a white star design emblazoned on the front (left side) and back. She also wears a pair of tight-fitting shorts and black knee-high boots. She bears two scars on her midriff and wields an arm cannon as well as a katana. A blue flame shoots out from her left eye, which I think it is a nice touch to her overall appearance.

Dead Master appears as a girl with wavy black hair with straight bangs, and neon green eyes. Her outfit is similar to a traditional Gothic Lolita costume (I’m guessing Goth is the new trend among fans?). She wears a black dress and a black bolero. Her dress extends down to her thighs and is accented with a white ribbon attached to her waist. Dead Master also wears a pair of leggings and a pair of black pumps. She wears a pair of black gauntlets on each hand. On her head, a pair of long horns which resemble a pair of vertebrae with each tip made out of three smaller tips joined at the end.

Dead Master also has a pair of wings which sit low on her back. Most of the time she is accompanied by two skulls, each with glowing eyes, nose and mouth. Her weapon of choice is a large scythe with an unusually-shaped blade. The long handle features similar vertebra-like details.

There’s also a few unconfirmed supporting characters for Black★Rock Shooter’s OVA, I’ll cover them in the illustrations below.

Insane Black★Rock Shooter, presumed to be another form of Black★Rock Shooter. Complete with purple eyes and purple flame on the left eye.

Black★Gold Saw. A girl with red eyes and long black hair. A red flame shoots out from her left eye.

Black★Devil Girl. A spectacled girl with long wavy black hair and neon green eyes, complete with matching neon green flame on the left eye.

Black★Matagi. A girl with short black hair and purple eyes. A purple-colored flame shoots from her left eye.

Dragon Slayer. A girl with gold to yellow pupils and long black hair.

Maid Gunner. A girl with long black hair and pink eyes. Same as Dragon Slayer, she doesn't possess a flame in her eyes like the primary protagonists.

To conclude, I’ve been bought over by the artwork presented to me when I first lay my eyes on the Black★Rock Shooter Illustration. Surely, I do have friends who disapprove of the fact that Black★Rock Shooter might be a huge bubble that might burst in any moment’s time (especially if the OVA doesn’t do well). If you have read this article and find yourself favorable towards the character as well, be sure to follow the updated news at the official Black★Rock Shooter website.
